Theme Parks for Younger Children

Rides, games and cotton candy are the center of many childhood memories of a family trip to the local amusement park. Those of us old enough to remember a time before the Internet and cable recall theme parks of yore as a much simpler affair. Today's families can experience a variety of parks, from thrill rides to water fun to historical re-enactments. For those with young ones 48 inches and shorter who aren't quite ready for the triple-loop roller coasters and upside-down rides, we found the best kid-themed amusement parks.

Walt Disney World - Orlando, Florida
Disney World is emblematic as the park to beat all theme parks for young children and their parents. Disney has the early childhood set's number, and it shows at every turn. Disney World has a bevy of theme parks that each have parades, fireworks, trains, boats and cartoon characters appearing magically around every corner and at the dinner table (it's not called "Magic Kingdom" for nothing). Kids can experience attractions like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Legend of the Lion King, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and Cinderella's Golden Carousel in Fantasyland or ride the steam train from Mickey's Toontown Fair to Frontierland.

The Magic Kingdom is just the beginning of Walt Disney World. Other theme parks are Disney's Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, Disney-MGM Studios and Water Parks. If you want to experience the best of Walt Disney World, plan a multiple-day trip and take advantage of the Park Hopper pass, which grants unlimited admission to the major parks and use of Walt Disney World transportation.

Six Flags - Parks in 28 states
Six Flags, which originated in the 1960s as "Six Flags Over Texas" near Dallas-Fort Worth, now has 28 locations, not all of them alike. Some have water parks as well as theme parks. Others have animal or marine attractions. Six Flags locations include California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas. Popular Warner Brothers characters, such as Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck, appear throughout the parks.

Legoland - Carlsbad, California
Legoland in Carlsbad, California, is the company's first park in the United States. The company notes that Legoland is "designed specifically for children ages 3 through 12 and their parents." And guess what? The most awesome sights are made of Legos! These include a life-sized gorilla and an Egyptian-style pharaoh, the spittin' image of King Tut (and encased in a labyrinthine tomb). There is also a ferocious polar bear in an ice-white cave and a wolf pack defending its pups. For slightly older kids, the Aquazone Wave Racers offers a life-sized water ride that looks just like the scenes by the same name you may have cobbled together at home.

Sesame Place - Langhorne, Pennsylvania
Sesame Place ®, the nation's only theme park based on the award-winning television show Sesame Street ®, provides an interactive play experience for families with children ages 2-13. Enjoy 50 stimulating play activities featuring 14 exhilarating water attractions such as Sky Splash, live stage shows, the "Rock Around the Block" musical parade, the thrilling Vapor Trail roller coaster and memorable Sesame Street character greetings throughout the day. New in 2004 is an all-new live show "Big Bird's Beach Party." In this show, Sesame Street characters and a friend use their imaginations as they spend a hot summer day at the beach.

Water Country USA - Williamsburg, Virginia
Water cannons, slides and waterfalls are just a few of the fun things to do at Water Country USA in Williamsburg, Virginia. A member of the Anheuser-Busch family, the park is located just three miles from the 100-acre Busch Gardens. Attractions geared towards the younger set include the Minnow Matinee Theater and Kid's Kingdom, which has smaller-scale pools, fountains and water slides. Kids can also try riding the waves at Surfer's Bay. Parents should plan on accompanying their children while they "hang ten."
